Do You Need a Phono Preamp? Matching Your System

Short answer: You need a phono preamp whenever your amplifier, receiver, or powered speakers have no PHONO input. A phono preamp boosts the very small signal from a cartridge and applies the RIAA equalization curve. Many turntables include one; many do not. Check the back of your amp for an input labeled PHONO, and check your turntable for a PHONO/LINE switch or LINE output. If neither has one, add a standalone phono preamp or choose a turntable with a built-in stage.

What a phono preamp does

A phono preamp, also called a phono stage, solves a mismatch. A turntable cartridge creates a very small electrical signal when it reads the record groove. That signal is much weaker than the line-level signal your amplifier expects from a CD player, streamer, or computer. The phono preamp boosts it to line level.

The preamp also applies the RIAA equalization curve. When a record is cut, the bass is reduced and the treble is boosted so the groove can be cut more cleanly. A phono preamp reverses that curve during playback. Without it, a record will sound thin and distant: quiet overall and short on bass.

Not every system needs a separate box. Some amplifiers include a PHONO input, and many turntables have a built-in phono preamp. Your job is simply to match the turntable to the input you already have. Start here: what is a phono stage and phono preamp gain.

Check your amplifier or receiver first

Look at the back panel of your amplifier, receiver, or powered speakers. An input labeled PHONO is the clearest sign that the amplifier already contains a phono preamp. On older receivers you may also see a small ground terminal next to the RCA jacks; that terminal is for the turntable's ground wire.

If you see PHONO, you can choose a turntable that outputs only a phono-level signal. If you do not see PHONO, you need a phono preamp somewhere between the turntable and the amplifier.

Check your turntable

Turntable makers label outputs in different ways. A pair of RCA jacks with a separate ground wire and a label like PHONO means the turntable does not include a phono preamp. A label like LINE or AUX means the turntable's built-in preamp is active. Some turntables include a PHONO/LINE switch so you can choose which output to use.

If the turntable has a switch, set it to LINE when connecting to AUX inputs, and set it to PHONO when connecting to an amplifier's PHONO input. With the switch in the wrong position, you can get either an overdriven or a very quiet signal. Read more on built-in phono preamp vs external and how to ground a turntable.

Powered speakers, Bluetooth, and USB

Many modern listening setups do not have a phono input: powered speakers with AUX inputs, soundbars, Bluetooth speakers, and desktop systems. For those, the simplest pairing is a turntable with a built-in phono preamp. The preamp brings the cartridge signal up to line level, and then you connect the turntable's LINE output to the speaker or amplifier.

Bluetooth adds a separate step. A Bluetooth turntable needs to send a line-level signal to its wireless transmitter, so it needs a phono preamp before the Bluetooth stage. Bluetooth Classic, the radio used for wireless audio streaming, is designed to carry that audio between devices. If the turntable only has a PHONO output and no built-in preamp, you still need a phono preamp before any Bluetooth transmitter or external input.

USB turntables work the same way on the analog side. A built-in phono preamp prepares the signal for both the USB encoder and the RCA outputs. If you are digitizing records, start with USB turntable digitizing and then compare Bluetooth turntables or USB turntables.

When an external phono preamp makes sense

If your amplifier lacks PHONO and your turntable lacks a built-in preamp, a standalone phono preamp is the missing piece. It sits between the turntable and an AUX or LINE input, and it can be replaced or upgraded without changing the turntable or the amplifier.

An external preamp also gives you more flexibility as you change cartridges. Moving magnet cartridges and moving coil cartridges have different output levels and loading needs; a dedicated phono preamp usually offers adjustments a built-in stage does not. See moving magnet vs moving coil cartridge and phono cartridge loading.

For a simple first system, a built-in preamp is often all you need. For a system you plan to grow, a turntable without a preamp plus a separate phono stage leaves you more room to tune the sound.

Set up cleanly, then listen

Once you know which preamp path your system uses, take a minute to handle the records themselves. The Library of Congress recommends handling grooved discs by the edge and label areas only, keeping playback equipment clean and well maintained, and storing discs upright on sturdy shelves. Those habits protect the record and the stylus.

Check the connections twice: turntable output to the correct input, ground wire connected if your preamp or amplifier has a ground terminal, and the PHONO/LINE switch set correctly. A humming or very quiet signal is often a setup issue, not a reason to buy a different component.

Questions

Do all turntables need a phono preamp?

No. A turntable with a PHONO/LINE switch or a LINE output has a built-in phono preamp. A turntable with only PHONO output does not, so it needs a phono preamp or an amplifier PHONO input.

How do I know if my receiver has a phono preamp?

Look on the back panel for an input labeled PHONO. It usually appears as a pair of RCA jacks, and on many receivers there is also a small ground terminal. If you see PHONO, the preamp is inside the receiver.

Can I connect a turntable without a phono preamp to an AUX input?

You can physically connect it, but the signal will be too weak and will lack the RIAA equalization that makes records sound correct. You need a phono preamp between the turntable and the AUX input.

Is a built-in phono preamp as good as an external one?

For a simple setup, a built-in stage is convenient and often perfectly fine. An external phono preamp can offer features like adjustable gain and cartridge loading, which helps if you plan to change cartridges or use a moving coil model.

Do Bluetooth turntables still need a phono preamp?

Yes, before the audio reaches the Bluetooth transmitter. Most Bluetooth turntables include a built-in phono preamp, but check that the turntable has a LINE output or an internal preamp, because the wireless stage needs a line-level signal.

What does a PHONO/LINE switch do?

It chooses whether the turntable uses its built-in phono preamp. Set it to LINE for AUX inputs and to PHONO when connecting to an amplifier PHONO input.
